Incorporated in 1908, Tukwila is a major retail center for South King County. Tukwila features no B&O or utilities taxes, and is the computer sales capital of Washington. Close proximity to Interstates 5 and 405, and State Route 167 make Tukwila accesible from anywhere in the county. The city is 15 minutes from Seattle, with Sea-Tac International Airport only two miles away. The city is also a major retail and manufacturing center for South King County.

Tukwila’s location makes it a very business friendly city. It is located at the junction of three ancient river valleys which makes it a prime trading and transportation center. Located only 12 miles south of downtown Seattle and 17 miles north of downtown Tacoma, theses cities can be accessed through nearby freeways; Interstate 5, Interstate 405 and State Route 167.

There is also a quality public transit system including the Sounder Commuter Rail Station and an Amtrak Station.  Construction is underway for a light rail station at the southeast corner of the intersection between Southcenter Boulevard and International Boulevard. The new station will feature a new transit center and two Park and Ride parking lots. This would give many more residents access to public transportation to nearby cities. The new light rail station is expected to open in 2009.

There are a great number of development opportunities in the city. In Tukwila’s urban center, over 700,000 square feet is planned for a number of retail and restaurants spaces. Near the southern border of the city, the city plans to annex land that will be used for mixed use development, including retail, residential and high-tech use, up to 14 million square feet. Westfield Southcenter Mall is also being revitalized. There are plans to add about 400,000 square feet of retail space and two parking garages. The new development will add to the mall an extra 75 specialty stores, a new atrium, a food court, 6 new restaurants and an AMC Theatre. There are also plans to redevelop Tukwila Village located on International Boulevard.
